Top 12 Things to Do at the Victoria Falls in Livingstone, Zambia

Livingtsone isn’t just about the Victoria Falls (although, let’s be honest, they are spectacular).

The Zambian side of this majestic site offers a mix of adventure, history, culture, and wildlife that turns a simple visit into an unforgettable journey. Our Marketing Manager, Izzy, was there recently and she’s come up with her top 12 things to do when you visit – including where to stay to make the most of it!

The Victoria Falls and the gorge

1. Stay at Waterberry Zambezi Lodge

For a truly immersive Zambezi experience, Waterberry Zambezi Lodge is our top choice. Nestled on the banks of the mighty river, it’s a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of town. You’ll wake up to birdsongs, sip sundowners with hippos grunting nearby, and enjoy the warmest hospitality in the region. The lush gardens, cozy bungalows, and top-notch staff make it the perfect base for exploring Livingstone and the Victoria Falls.

Waterberry offers various accommodation options to suit different travel styles. Choose from the main lodge, featuring seven charming bungalows; the more secluded Woodlands, home to three safari-style tents; or the exclusive River Farmhouse, a private five-bedroom retreat with its own pool and dedicated staff—ideal for families or groups seeking flexibility and privacy.

While two activities are included in the nightly rate, Waterberry can also arrange any of the adventures on this list, ensuring a seamless and unforgettable stay.

2. Witness the Mighty Victoria Falls

A visit to Livingstone must – obviously – begin with viewing the world’s largest curtain of falling water! Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “The Smoke That Thunders,” the Victoria Falls offer a sensory overload of mist, roar, and rainbows. Walk across the Knife-Edge Bridge for the finest views or visit during the full moon to witness the surreal lunar rainbow.

The Falls span approximately 1.7 kilometres (1 mile) wide and plunge 108 metres (354 feet) into the Batoka Gorge, making them one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

The experience varies by season: February and March offer an ideal balance, with just enough water flow to appreciate the full grandeur of the Falls without getting completely drenched. From April to June, the Falls reach their peak, unleashing a thundering cascade that ensures a soaking for visitors. From August onwards, as Zambia’s dry season sets in, the water levels drop, revealing dramatic rock formations and enabling thrilling activities such as swimming in Devil’s Pool.

Regardless of the season, the Zambezi River never runs dry, and Victoria Falls remains a breathtaking spectacle throughout the year.

3. Historical Tour of the Victoria Falls Bridge

This was Izzy’s revelation on this trip!

Standing over the gorge, the Victoria Falls Bridge is an engineering marvel with a rich history dating back to 1905—celebrating over 120 years of steel and spray.

Join a guided historical tour to learn about its construction and its role in Cecil Rhodes’ ambitious Cape-to-Cairo railway dream. But this tour isn’t for the faint-hearted! You’ll be walking beneath the bridge on the maintenance catwalk, securely tethered with a harness as you take in jaw-dropping views of the Falls, the Boiling Pot, and the dramatic gorge below.

The tour is led by a charismatic guide who channels the eccentric George Imbault, the French chief construction engineer, bringing the bridge’s history to life in vivid detail. Did you know that no significant part of the bridge has ever needed replacement (apart from the raising of the deck in 1929)? At the time of its completion, it was the highest bridge in the world. After crossing under the bridge, you’ll return via the main road, walking alongside the historic railway track.

And for the true daredevils—yes, this is the very spot where you can take the ultimate leap… but more on that later!t

4. Helicopter Flight Over the Falls and Gorge

While we’re at the Falls, let’s join the angels and take to the skies for an unforgettable helicopter flight over Victoria Falls. The famous “Flight of Angels” offers breathtaking aerial views, revealing the full scale of this natural wonder. But it doesn’t stop there—you’ll also swoop down into the dramatic Batoka Gorge for an adrenaline-pumping ride between its towering cliffs. As you take in the scene, it’s easy to understand why David Livingstone described the Falls as “scenes so lovely they must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.”

Flights range from a thrilling 12–15 minutes to an extended 25-minute adventure, with the optional seamless drop-off back at Waterberry.

5. Adrenaline Rush: Bungee, Gorge Swing & More

Calling all thrill-seekers! The Victoria Falls Bridge is home to one of the highest bungee jumps in the world. Not a fan of free-falling headfirst?

Try the gorge swing, zip-lining, or white-water rafting for an adrenaline fix like no other.

6. Visit the Livingstone Museum

Interested in exploring Zambia’s history? The Livingstone Museum offers an intriguing insight into the nation’s cultural and natural heritage. Featuring exhibits on archaeology, local traditions, and even some of David Livingstone’s original belongings, it’s a thought-provoking stop for a deeper understanding of the area. Allow yourself a good two hours (or bypass the archaeological introduction and go directly to the Livingstone gallery and the recent history of Zambia).

For an authentic taste of Zambian daily life, head to one of Livingstone’s markets.

Whether you’re hunting for colorful chitenge fabrics, handmade crafts, or fresh produce, this bustling market is a sensory adventure. It’s also a great spot to practice your bargaining skills and take home a unique souvenir.

8. Step Back in Time at the Railway Museum (or Ride the Royal Livingstone Express)

Train enthusiasts will love the Railway Museum, home to vintage steam locomotives and colonial-era coaches that trace the story of Zambia’s railway heritage.

The museum is located on the historic site of the Zambezi Sawmills, once a bustling hub where timber from Western Zambia was processed and transported.

For an even more immersive experience, step aboard The Royal Livingstone Express, a beautifully restored steam train that takes you on a journey back in time. Enjoy a leisurely ride with stunning sunset views over the gorge, followed by an indulgent five-course dinner in true old-world style.

Bonus: The Railway Museum also features a fascinating exhibition on the history of Jewish communities in Zambia, offering an unexpected but insightful glimpse into the country’s past.

Artist at WayiWayi Art Gallery

One of Izzy’s most delightful discoveries on her recent trip, WayiWayi Art Gallery & Studio is a true hidden gem for art aficionados. This family-run creative space is more than just a gallery—it’s a vibrant hub of Zambian artistry, where contemporary works tell deep cultural and personal stories.

Beyond admiring the stunning pieces on display, visitors can engage with the artists, learn about their inspirations, and even take part in workshops designed for both local youth and curious travelers. If you have a passion for art with meaning, this special spot is not to be missed.

10. Dine with Gentle Giants at The Elephant Café

For a dining experience like no other, book a table at The Elephant Café. This café offers gourmet bush cuisine served on a stunning deck overlooking the Zambezi River. Whether you’re enjoying breakfast, lunch, high tea, or dinner (reservation required with a minimum number of participants), the ambiance is unforgettable, and the view of the River truly amazing.

What makes it even more special? The chance to observe rescued elephants up close. We particularly enjoy watching these majestic creatures and capturing their beauty through photography. If you’re keen, you can also feed them—feel their rough skin and marvel at the dexterity of their trunks.

11. Rhino Walk in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park

For a truly unique wildlife encounter, head to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park for a guided rhino walk. This is one of the only places in Zambia where you can witness the country’s last remaining white rhinos in their natural habitat, up close and on foot. With the help of expert guides, you’ll enjoy a safe and respectful experience as you observe these magnificent creatures.

What makes this experience even more special is the incredible protection program behind it. The rhinos in the park are part of an ongoing conservation effort to safeguard the species, ensuring they thrive in a protected environment. By participating in this walk, you’re not only experiencing wildlife in an intimate setting, but also supporting efforts to preserve these iconic animals for future generations.

12. Sunset (or Sunrise) Cruise on the Zambezi

Last but certainly not least, a slow cruise on the Zambezi is an absolute must-do when in Livingstone. We highly recommend joining one of the guides at Waterberry Zambezi Lodge for some of the finest sunset cruises in the area. Watch the river come to life in the golden glow while sipping on an iconic G&T (or your choice of cool drink)—or a hot beverage if you’re catching the sunrise.

This experience offers a magical way to take in the serene beauty of the Zambezi while spotting wildlife along the riverbanks. It’s also a fantastic birding opportunity, as the area is home to a wide range of species. The cruise is peaceful, slow-paced, and incredibly enjoyable.
