LUANGWA’S GREEN SEASON

While Europe is often covered in snow this time of the year and people are waiting for spring to arrive our green season is in full swing. It seems everything is exploding after long month of extreme heat and draught. The bush is lush and green and full of life. You may even call it the time of plenty as most animals start having their young at this time of the year.

Amazing thunderstorms roll over the hills of the Luangwa Valley and fill the lagoons with water. The rivers swell up to their highest level so that the hippos, after having survived the dry season in little waterholes with many fights for space, can finally spread out again. At this time of the year it happens often that the Luangwa River comes right up to our deck and the plain in front of Kafunta River Lodge is no longer a plain but an open space of water.

We use this time of the year to prepare for the coming season, get some rest and do the necessary refurbishment to make sure everything is in order for our guests to arrive in April. At the end of march usually we are ready to welcome our guests.

Although it is nice to have some peace and quietness we miss showing you the wonders of the bush and by the end of our three month break we are definitely ready for it. This year we will welcome you in our new reception. Our major refurbishment has been done in 2010/2011 so that now we concentrated on little bits and pieces. We hope to welcome you all in 2012 to see what this year brings to the Luangwa Valley!
