It's That Sparkling Time of Year
Newsletter
Dear Kafunta Friend!
Welcome back!
There’s something magical about this time of year, don’t you think? Everything feels brighter, warmer, and a little more joyful. Of course it is, it’s the Festive Season!
Here in Zambia, the season is festive in more ways than one. The bush is bursting back to life with the rains, painting the landscape in lush greens. Migratory birds are returning with their songs, while tiny newborn impalas and piglets are adding an extra dose of cuteness. It’s a time of renewal – and also a time for us to close the lodge for a well-deserved rest (while nature buzzes along in the background).

A Very Mfuwe Christmas
On Christmas Eve, we joined the annual carols at Kalawani Pans. Picture this: majestic trees, a cheerful choir made up of lodge staff from across Mfuwe, and guests gathering with drinks and snacks in hand. It’s a casual, joyful community tradition that feels so authentically Zambian. Even the rain and elephants decided to take the afternoon off, letting the music and holiday spirit shine. Christmas Day was all about togetherness and indulgence. Our guests came together for a delicious lunch featuring turkey and all the trimmings. The star of the celebration? Our fabulous lodge host, Betty, in her stunning red dress—she looked as vibrant as the festivities themselves! |
Squirrel Update
If you remember our last newsletter, Paige had rescued two baby squirrels, Robin and Duiker. Well, we’re happy to report their transition to the wild has been a great success! With gentle encouragement, Paige released them back into nature while keeping their cage open for a “soft launch.” Robin has now fully embraced the wild, while Duiker still pops by regularly for a visit (and a little smooch to everyone). We’re so proud of their return to the bush! |
2024 in Pictures - our photorama
As we bid farewell to 2024, we’re celebrating the season in style with our annual Photorama! This year, I’ve chosen 24 iconic photos among all those shared by our guests. From extraordinary wildlife moments to stunning birdlife and landscapes, these images are a tribute to the beauty of the Luangwa Valley—and a wonderful way to close out the year. I hope you enjoy them too!
And we end this newsletter, and the year, with our traditional messages of gratitude and wishes to our guests, staff and trade partners.
Here’s to a 2025 filled with health, happiness, and countless adventures. We’ll be here to welcome you back when our doors reopen on March 29th!
Until then, we wish you and your loved ones a magical holiday season and a bright start to the New Year.
